Ed Welch has made a lifelong living in the antiques trade. He is a freelance
writer specializing in antique and art related topics. Welch is an active
antique dealer and publisher of the Maine Antique Dealer Directory. This
annually produced directory of Maine dealers contains the names, addresses,
and telephone numbers of nearly every antique dealer in the state.
Welch also gives after dinner talks and runs a seminar on the subject The
Business of Doing Business in Antiques. He speaks, writes, and lectures
on antiques from an inside the trade prospective.
Although he has maintained an active antique business since the mid 1960s,
his interest in antiques has changed over the years and so has the types
of antiques in his inventory. In the 1960's, he carried an extensive selection
of antique firearms . During the decade of the 70's, he specialized in various
types of china - Limoge and Blue Willow were a speciality. During the 1980's,
his interest turned to American country furniture in original paint. About
five years ago, Welch began handling medical and dental related antiques
including eyeglasses and spectacles. The majority of his antique business
is now devoted to this field. Welch also deals in 20th century designer
furniture by Charles Eames, Herman Miller, Saarinen, Knoll and others.
