Birthing Manikin Circa 1850

1063-19 . . . Birthing Manikin, . . . . This manikin was recently de-commissioned from a medical museum. I was lucky enough to have made the highest bid. Very few of these manikins remain, in any condition. This one has been repaired and has a small patch in one place.

William Smellie (1697-1763) specialized in breech births and gave midwife classes to both men and women. Because of legal restrictions, he invented an artificial pelvis with artificial babies to use in his classes. Smellie's pelvis machine and one of his birthing dolls can be seen at the British Museum of Science in London. There is an entire chapter devoted to this subject in the book "Antique Medical Instruments" by Elisabeth Bennion. The book is a Sotheby's Publication.
